Enter Our Wild Kingdom
A Walk On The Wild Side is the most diverse exotic animal refuge of its kind in the State of Oregon. We are dedicated to helping all species of wild animals who, for various reasons, find themselves without a place to live out their lives. Many of our tenants are victims of divorce, foreclosure, financial hardship or were purchased by people who were ill-prepared for the specialized care that most of these animals require.
We are an animal rescue and preservation establishment, not a "sanctuary". Most "sanctuaries" are eager to condemn private ownership-after all, this works as a valuable tool to raise money for their facility! Truth be told, they all started out as "private owners" and eventually decided nobody else should be able to own an exotic animal.
In addition to housing unwanted exotic species, we pride ourselves in educating the public about responsible animal ownership. Our ambassador animals attend numerous public events every year, and each one has its own story to tell and its own lessons to teach. While each animal has its own unique, sometimes tragic story, they share a common trait: they were all facing an uncertain future and possible death sentence before being adopted by our facility.
A Walk On The Wild Side is currently in the process of obtaining non-profit 501-C3 status. We are located on rural property in Canby, Oregon. We currently house 175 animals, including 84 different species. Most shelters specialize in a particular type of animal; ie: felines, reptiles, farm animals, etc. State Animal control agencies often automatically euthanize exotic animals as they do not have the facilities or knowledge to be able to accommodate them.
At A Walk On The Wild Side we have experts with experience in many fields, allowing us to take in almost any non-domestic animal that needs to be housed and maintain them for the remainder of their lives. Whether cute and cuddly or venomous and slithery, we offer a safe and permanent home and treat every species with the care and respect they deserve.
As required by Federal law, we are licensed and inspected by the United States Department of Agriculture, and also hold special permits from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife which allow us to take in illegally held species from the public. We are fully licensed and insured.
Please visit our "photo gallery" to meet some of our amazing residents and our "donation" page to see how you can help us make a difference in the lives of these incredible beings. We absolutely love the work that we do and believe in our quest to provide the best care and quality of life for our animals.
Our facility is always a "work in progress", and we continually strive to improve our facility, upgrade our enclosures and find new ways to enrich the lives of our astonishing animals. With the help of compassionate people, we can continue to provide safe, healthy environments for otherwise endangered exotic species.
